The Dutch have cast their votes on who they think should be the government for the next 4 years. Their decision was very poor.
The left (socialist) parties lost a lot of voters. In my province, of course, people were more calm and took their time to look at the financial picture. All vital left parties lost big time, apart from the Green Leftist party. The rest of the country, especially the south, has always been very much to the right and it goes to show: the Party For Freedom (Geert Wilders' PVV) scored very high, they're the third largest party now. Of course the party is anything but liberal.
If you take a look at the Netherlands, the northern three provinces are pretty left, though in Friesland the southern edge marks the top side of the Bible Belt. Going down below Drenthe, the Bible belt continues until it reaches Germany. The middle and west of the country is mainly right, with a few sparks of red hope here and there. The absolute worst part of my country is the absolute south, where people's voting choices are right or extreme-right.
The outcome shows the clear division of our country, between left and right voters. In this economic crisis, people stop caring about single issues and (should) vote for either left or rigt. Unfortunately this doesn't occur to all people. Actually, it didn't occur to some that there even was an election, since only three quarters of the population actually turned up to do their civil duty.
On a less grumpy note, the parties with a Christian foundation took a pretty big hit. At least this bodes well for our future and proves the efforts in educating ourselves are paying off.
I do hope the right party who is going to lead my country, recognizes some of the left voters and teams up with a left party to form a government. I hope they dump Wilders and his hair-do. Unfortunately the Christian Democrats will most likely take part in the government again. My party might, the second largest part at this time, is probably not going to make it in. The Labour Party has finally shown some backbone, and it paid off; but this makes them incompatible with the right. All I can do is pray they don't include the Christian Union again...
So it's going to be 4 more of years of conservative government for the Dutch.
I'm not a democrat.
What bothers me about the system is that somewhere here, many people are wrong. There should be one party which is the best for my country, but no one seems to know which it is. This diversity causes division and suspicion. I'd rather see people actually figuring out which party is the best and elect them to form the entire government, instead of focusing on personal gain and voting for one of many parties which just happens to have won them over - in most cases, I think, completely incidental. I think a political statement is either true or false, ultimately good or bad for my country. So how can it be there is so much grey area?
The worst about this whole ordeal is that there are still religious parties in my government, the government is still going to be conservative and education and healthcare might have to bleed to help the government out of its debt.
I've been grumpy all day.

I've got the solution: Since the Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy, just let Queen Beatrix run the government. :)
Well, that's one of the issues we really need to start looking at. No one ever voted for her to be in that position of power over us. Now I'm not saying we should democratically elect every person in office - we should just have the best possible people in office. She is not the best possible queen.
I could think of a few better queens.
I thank you for posting this; I get to keep track of things other than here. Being of some Dutch background I want to know what is happening there.
That is too bad. Like here in the USA, we have a lot of right wing republicans who take office under the guise of less government
